It's finally getting warm out! and it's almost spring!
you what that means. garden time babyyy
I try to plant a garden every year and usually I'm really bad at it. I buy seeds and plant the whole pack and by the end of the season I have a singular tomato plant that gives me a singular tomato. At least it was a really good tomato..
This year I'm trying to plan it out a little more though, so I hope it will go better!
I'm starting extra early this year, because where I live it gets warm pretty early on (see: it is 80°F outside in early February), and usually I start growing them in March (that's usually when the seed packets tell you to plant the seeds) and whatever like, singular plant I have surviving by late August only gives me food then. and I want vegetables sooner, so. late January it is. It'd really suck if it suddenly got cold again this year.. (hopefully not foreshadowing).
I think my main failing is not having enough places to put them when they're ready to be put in the ground. Or having a good place to put them, but the soil is so bad that they end up hardly growing at all and dying. The dirt in my area is mostly just sand that has like, no nutrients at all in it.
If any Experienced Vegetable Growers are reading this and going "this guy's an idiot that has no idea how to grow a vegetable the right way" you'd be right!! My vegetable growing skills are purely gained from trial and error and trying my best to copy what other people do and just hoping it works out.
So what am I planting this year? glad you didn't ask. Squash, green beans, and tomato.
My experience with trying to grow squash is.. bad. I don't know what it is about them but no matter how hard I try to make them grow, they always end up dying, not growing very big at all, or never giving me any squash!! frustraiting. I do not have high hopes for my squash this year. I never have high hopes for the squash. but I will do my best to try and make them live (and give me good squash this time).
I've never tried growing green beans before, but I've heard they're not super hard to grow and give you a lot of beans, so I figured they're worth a shot. I'll admit that I also don't have super high hopes for the green beans because I've never tried to grow them before but I'm sure they'll be easier than the squash.
I think I have the highest hopes for the tomatos. I've successfully grown at least one good tomato before so I know I can do it. Not to jinx it or anything but I think I'll get at least one good tomato out of this endeavor.
Here's last year's one good tomato. for reference.
now on to...
I want to say I planted them like a week ago but I really don't remember now!! The first ones to start growing have been growing for about 3 days now. yay.
First of all, my squash!
They're so cute! I always forget about how fast they grow.
Next are my green beans.
Also cute! And I'm a little surprised at how fast they started to grow too.
None of my tomatos have sprouted yet, I hope they do soon. I'm a little scared they might not grow but I'm sure I just have to be patient.
In their place, you can see my very large green onion. and my cat's opinion on it.
I'm going to make a dedicated page in my photography section to document the growth of my vegetables very soon, so keep on the look out for that if you're interested.
This is partially because they are my babies and I love them and partially because maybe if I have to publicly document my plants growth on the internet, I'll be more incentivized to keep them alive. It'd be really embarrassing if everyone saw me epic fail at gardening again.
Also posting some scenery pics and stuff in the other albums so look at those if you wanna. And I'm making a Valentine's post soon!! It feels super weird talking about spring and gardening before Valentine's day, but that's just how it is I guess.
That's all for now!! adios.
